Kansas City waited until Day 3 to address the offense, but adding Johnson to a backfield that now includes Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III should give the offense a more dynamic element moving forward, which was lacking in the worst way in 2025.

Allen profiles as a developmental slot option, and Nussmeier is a classic (for most teams) late-round swing at the quarterback position and someone who could compete for a roster spot, though the Chiefs traditionally carry just two. With Fields and Mahomes, Nussmeier has some pre-season trust to earn from Andy Reid to carry a third. He will have an offseason without Mahomes to prove it, though.

Royals Report: The Stars Get KC Back on Track

After three difficult weeks, the Kansas City Royals finally showed signs of life.

Kansas City went 4–2, sweeping the Los Angeles Angels before dropping two of three to the Oakland Athletics.

The highlight came Sunday, when Lane Thomas launched a walk-off home run in the 10th inning to cap an 11–9 win and complete the sweep. It was his first homer of the season and part of a strong week in which he hit .385.

Overall, the offense finally showed up.

Salvador Perez and Bobby Witt Jr. led the charge, combining for 15 hits, four home runs, and 10 RBIs.

On the mound, Cole Ragans and Kris Bubic set the tone, each allowing just one run in their starts. Ragans, in particular, was dominant, striking out 11 batters over six innings.

It’s still early, but this is the kind of week that can stabilize things if it continues. As rough as 12-19 is, they’re only 3.5 games back of the 16-16 Cleveland Guardians.

Big news came out of Lawrence, KS this week when the Jayhawks landed the No. 1 overall recruit in the country, Tyran Stokes.

Stokes, a 6-foot-7 wing with elite athleticism and playmaking ability, chose Kansas over Kentucky and Oregon. It is a major win for Bill Self and his staff.

He joins an already strong 2026 class that includes Taylen Kinney (No. 13) and Davion Adkins (No. 70), according to 247Sports.

Expectations were high, and they just got higher for the Jayhawks.

To be clear, the Chiefs are putting their entire passing game offense in his hands, but he has a chance to make a bigger impact in 2026 or 2027 than most mid-day three picks. Allen is a little stray from the Chiefs’ typical type at the position with his ability as a true separator and polished route runner vs a raw, elite athlete that they work into space. With the addition of new wide receiver coach Chad O’Shea, it’s going to be fun to see how the receiving room changes, and a lot of that started with the selection of Allen.

Cyrus Allen Five Play Film Room

1) Route Running

Cyrus Allen has incredible pacing, fluidity, and salesmanship to his routes that allow him to create immediate separation. His 11’ broad jump at his Pro Day shows up in his explosion off the line of scrimmage when attacking space against off-coverage and when working out of breaks or cuts to put space between him and a defender. It’s not all about the explosion, though; he has fantastic deceleration that comes with a level change and lower body flexibility that allows him to get into breaks without tipping his hand.

On vertical routes like the one above, Allen does a great job attacking and then manipulating a defensive back’s leverage with his initial route stem, followed by the use of head/shoulder fakes that work in unison with his footwork. He consistently puts defenders on their heels and off-balance by intentionally attacking their leverage and forcing them to respond to his movement. He is intentional about not getting too far off his track laterally when manipulating these leverages and working around the edge of a defender. He works to re-stack the defender to keep them on his back hip and open throwing lanes by returning to his line if he has to deviate when working past a defender.

The team clearly didn’t hold the same opinion, and decided to give Steve Spagnuolo and his defense and a player that he clearly coveted. General Manager Brett Veach moved up from 9 to 6, surrendering picks 74 and 148 to select who the first cornerback in the draft.

What qualities made the team fall in love with him, and what does he bring to this defense? Here’s a breakdown of what the Chiefs got in their new top cornerback.

The background

Delane was an east-coast prospect who elected to stay in the region by committing to Virginia Tech. He played for three years for the program before entering the transfer portal. As one of the hottest names of his portal cycle, he earned significant interest from major programs before committing to LSU. He earned First Team All-American honors for his outstanding year with the Tigers.

The profile

Delane is 6’0” and 187 pounds. He is a little undersized from a weight perspective than you would prefer for the position, but it doesn’t seem to hinder his game to this point all that much. His arms are 30” — only a quarter inch longer than former Chief Trent McDuffie’s.

At the NFL Combine, Delane ran a 4.38 forty-yard dash, and didn’t do any other testing other than running.
