(QB, LSU)

It may not have followed the script fans expected, but the logic became clearer as the weekend unfolded.

Delane and Canady help stabilize a reworked secondary, while Woods and Thomas inject much-needed talent and depth into the defensive front. Kansas City waited until Day 3 to address the offense, but adding Johnson to a backfield that now includes Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III should give the offense a more dynamic element moving forward, which was lacking in the worst way in 2025.

Allen profiles as a developmental slot option, and Nussmeier is a classic (for most teams) late-round swing at the quarterback position and someone who could compete for a roster spot, though the Chiefs traditionally carry just two. With Fields and Mahomes, Nussmeier has some pre-season trust to earn from Andy Reid to carry a third. He will have an offseason without Mahomes to prove it, though.

And the work did not stop at the conclusion of the draft. It was his first homer of the season and part of a strong week in which he hit .385.

Overall, the offense finally showed up.

Salvador Perez and Bobby Witt Jr. led the charge, combining for 15 hits, four home runs, and 10 RBIs.

On the mound, Cole Ragans and Kris Bubic set the tone, each allowing just one run in their starts. Ragans, in particular, was dominant, striking out 11 batters over six innings.

It’s still early, but this is the kind of week that can stabilize things if it continues. The hosts praised Delane’s instincts, specifically his “no-panic” demeanor in coverage and his ability to diagnose plays in real-time.

This high-floor pick was balanced by the selection of Peter Woods, a defensive tackle out of Clemson. Woods is described as the “caterpillar waiting to turn into a butterfly”—a player with immense raw torque and power who, under the guidance of Joe Cullen, has the highest ceiling of any player in the class.

Speed Off the Edge and Instincts in the Slot

The Chiefs bucked their usual size trends at pick No. 40 by selecting Oklahoma’s R Mason Thomas. Kansas City Chiefs selected Cincinnati Bearcat wide receiver Cyrus Allen. Why this pick in particular is so important is because it was the first pick — or even move — this off-season that directly tried to address the Chiefs’ passing game. Yes, they added Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker and drafted Emmett Johnson earlier in the round. Those two players can help the passing game indirectly with their running ability and some receiving out of the backfield, but Allen was the first investment this entire off-season in bringing something new directly to the passing game.

To be clear, the Chiefs are putting their entire passing game offense in his hands, but he has a chance to make a bigger impact in 2026 or 2027 than most mid-day three picks. Allen is a little stray from the Chiefs’ typical type at the position with his ability as a true separator and polished route runner vs a raw, elite athlete that they work into space. With the addition of new wide receiver coach Chad O’Shea, it’s going to be fun to see how the receiving room changes, and a lot of that started with the selection of Allen.

Like I was doing leading up to the NFL Draft, I recorded a full Film Room for the KCSN Discord — all subscribers to the newsletter should have an invite to the Discord in their welcome e-mail — covering Cyrus Allen and what the 5’11”, 183lb wide receiver can bring to the Chiefs’ offense. I wanted to break out five plays from that Film Room that best showcase Allen as a wide receiver and how he can fit with the Chiefs. Of course, the entire Film Room video (about 35 minutes) will be posted at the end of the article as well!

Cyrus Allen Five Play Film Room

1) Route Running

Cyrus Allen has incredible pacing, fluidity, and salesmanship to his routes that allow him to create immediate separation. His 11’ broad jump at his Pro Day shows up in his explosion off the line of scrimmage when attacking space against off-coverage and when working out of breaks or cuts to put space between him and a defender. It’s not all about the explosion, though; he has fantastic deceleration that comes with a level change and lower body flexibility that allows him to get into breaks without tipping his hand.

On vertical routes like the one above, Allen does a great job attacking and then manipulating a defensive back’s leverage with his initial route stem, followed by the use of head/shoulder fakes that work in unison with his footwork. He consistently puts defenders on their heels and off-balance by intentionally attacking their leverage and forcing them to respond to his movement. He is intentional about not getting too far off his track laterally when manipulating these leverages and working around the edge of a defender. He works to re-stack the defender to keep them on his back hip and open throwing lanes by returning to his line if he has to deviate when working past a defender.

2) Releasing at the Line of Scrimmage

Yes, the team lost starting cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson, but the success the organization has had in finding and identifying talent at the position created an expectation that the team could just continue to find value on day two and three of the draft, and churn and burn at the position.

The team clearly didn’t hold the same opinion, and decided to give Steve Spagnuolo and his defense and a player that he clearly coveted. General Manager Brett Veach moved up from 9 to 6, surrendering picks 74 and 148 to select who the first cornerback in the draft.

What qualities made the team fall in love with him, and what does he bring to this defense? Here’s a breakdown of what the Chiefs got in their new top cornerback.

The background

Delane was an east-coast prospect who elected to stay in the region by committing to Virginia Tech. He played for three years for the program before entering the transfer portal. As one of the hottest names of his portal cycle, he earned significant interest from major programs before committing to LSU. He earned First Team All-American honors for his outstanding year with the Tigers.

The profile

Delane is 6’0” and 187 pounds. He is a little undersized from a weight perspective than you would prefer for the position, but it doesn’t seem to hinder his game to this point all that much. His arms are 30” — only a quarter inch longer than former Chief Trent McDuffie’s.

At the NFL Combine, Delane ran a 4.38 forty-yard dash, and didn’t do any other testing other than running.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" While the talent of both players is evident, the hosts don’t shy away from the debate regarding the cost. The Delane trade required significant capital, and with needs at wide receiver and left tackle still lingering, the crew explores whether the Chiefs “painted themselves into a corner” by prioritizing the secondary so early.

Key Discussion Points:

The Price of Potential: Seth Keysor dives into Delane’s film, highlighting his “patient feet” and boundary physicality, but notes the inherent risk of trading a third and fifth-rounder for a position where the Chiefs have historically found late-round value.

Banking on a Bounce Back: The hosts discuss Peter Woods’ high ceiling. Despite a dip in production during his 2025 season at Clemson, Nate Taylor argues that his rare lateral agility makes him the ideal “heir apparent” to learn under Chris Jones.

Day 2 & 3 Depth: A look at Oklahoma edge rusher R Mason Thomas (No. 40) and the “low-risk, high-reward” selection of LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier with the 249th pick.

The episode concludes by questioning the vision for the offense. By spending their first several picks on defense, the Chiefs are betting heavily on their ability to develop late-round offensive flyers like Cyrus Allen or stabilize the line with existing veterans.

A New King in Lawrence: Tyran Stokes is a Jayhawk

The Pay Heed Podcast breaks down how Bill Self landed the nation’s top recruit and what it means for KU’s championship DNA.

KC Sports Network

In the high-stakes world of college basketball recruiting, few names carry the weight of Tyran Stokes.

On the latest episode of the Pay Heed Podcast via KC Sports Network, the crew dives deep into the monumental news: the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2026 class has officially committed to the Kansas Jayhawks.

This isn’t just another five-star addition; it’s a seismic shift in the national landscape. Standing at 6-foot-7 with a professional-grade frame, Stokes chose Lawrence over heavy hitters like Kentucky and Oregon.
