Behind the numbers: What is the analytical value of the Chiefs' free agency pickups?
Kansas City may have filled some key holes in the roster, but let's dive into how it stacks up against what they lost in free agency, according to PFF's Top 250 and WAR.
The past week has been an absolute whirlwind of NFL activity. Free agents have been flying off the board, the center market exploded to an utterly insane degree, NFL stars have been traded, the Rams took the entirety of the Chiefs cor’ cornerback corps, it’s been wild.
Every year, PFF puts out a list of the top 250 free agents. Part of that list is the amount of WAR, or Wins Above Replacement, each player has earned in each of the past three seasons. PFF’s WAR stat is one of my favorites to use. It is not generally publicly available, so getting it with free agents is very nice to see.
I wanted to see how teams stacked up with gaining and losing free agents, and the overall value a team has amassed over the past week. I created a graphic that calculates how much WAR all the new free agents a team has signed, and how much WAR those teams lost in free agency.
