By the numbers: The Chiefs have a free agency dilemma
The Chiefs have the fifth-most snaps on expiring contracts and the lowest amount of cap space in the NFL.
The Super Bowl is over. The Seattle Seahawks stomped all over the New England Patriots the entire game, and it was glorious to behold. Through three quarters, the Patriots earned a grand total of 5 first downs. They also had 5 3-and-outs in the first three quarters. It was a miserable day to be a Patriot.
But we are not here to talk about the Patriots or the Super Bowl! Now that the 2025 NFL season is officially over, and a champion has been crowned, it is time to officially turn the page to the 2026 offseason. I have already written some about this, looking at cap space, and the options the Chiefs have for creating more.
Today, I want to take a look at free agents, both across the NFL and for the Chiefs in particular. Every year tons of players have expiring contracts, and every year a bunch of those players end up being extended just before free agency actually hits. This is especially true of the better players set to hit free agency. So many times at this point in the year, it looks like the free agent crop will be very good, and by the time free agency officially kicks off, it has lost much of its luster.
