Chiefs add Melvin Gordon, Bryan Edwards to practice squad | KCSN Daily 11.28
Plus Week 13 stat preview, KCSN podcasts, quotes and more Chiefs news.
Welcome back to a brand new week of KCSN Daily, where we deliver the best Kansas City Chiefs content to your inbox.
Brett Veach kicked off the new week by adding some depth to the practice squad — specifically two players who recently played for AFC West opponents. With the injury to Clyde Edwards-Helaire, the team sought to improve their running back depth. According to numerous reports, the Chiefs signed RB Melvin Gordon III to the practice squad.
A former first-round draft pick out of Wisconsin by the then-San Diego Chargers in 2015, Gordon has spent his entire career playing in the AFC West. He departed the Chargers as a free agent in 2019 signing with the Denver Broncos, where he spent the last three seasons.
In his time in Denver, Gordon notched 32 career starts with over 2,800 yards from scrimmage with 22 total touchdowns. However, his 12 fumbles during that span rank first among all NFL running backs. He also struggled in pass protection with the Broncos, allowing 17 pressures and one sack on 59 attempts according to PFF.
Gordon should provide good depth for Kansas City, but they should be cautious. His fumbling issues are what saw him released from Denver with five so far this season.
The Chiefs also made another practice squad move on Monday, signing former Las Vegas Raiders third-round draft pick Bryan Edwards to the practice squad. The new regime in Las Vegas sent Edwards to the Atlanta Falcons in a trade earlier this offseason, but he was recently waived after appearing in just six games for the Falcons.
In three games against the Chiefs since 2020, Edwards caught 6-of-9 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown. His production and development have been stifled by injury and organizational dysfunction to this point of his career, but Edwards is still a player with a lot of upside.
While Gordon’s signing could provide Kansas City with immediate depth, the move to add Edwards could be a move with the future in mind. Getting Edwards in the system now could give a head-start should they sign him to a reserve/future deal this offseason and bring him back as a potential contributor on offense in 2023.

Stats to know ahead of Week 13 vs. Bengals:
Series history: The Bengals lead the all-time series with the Chiefs 17-14. Their most recent win came in last year’s AFC title game after Kansas City’s offense stalled in the second half. Cincinnati has only lost once to the Chiefs in the Andy Reid era. That came back in Patrick Mahomes’ first season as a starter in 2018 when they beat an Andy Dalton-led Bengals team 45-10.
Fourth-down conversions: In a game that could come down to risk-taking, the Chiefs have a clear advantage. Cincinnati has converted on fourth down just 22% of the time this season. Kansas City has converted on fourth down 75% of the time this season.
Another big game for the pass rush: The Bengals attempted to revamp their offensive line this season to no avail. They have allowed the fifth-most sacks in the NFL this season with 35 on the year. Ironically, the Chiefs’ defense has the fifth-most sacks in the NFL this season with 35 total sacks on the year.
KCSN Update:
KCSN’s BJ Kissel sits down with ESPN's Matt Miller to get his stock up and stock down report from the Kansas City Chiefs' victory over the Los Angeles Rams.
10 Things - 20 things worth knowing from Chiefs’ win over Rams:
KCSN’s BJ Kissel gives you his 20 things that stood out from the Kansas City Chiefs' gritty win vs. the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.
Quotable:
“Yeah listen, I thought he ran hard. I think he had a lot of energy going and everything was fast it looked like to him. But he was productive. He had some good, strong runs. He caught the ball well when he had the opportunity to do that and had a big gain there. So, yeah no, I thought for the first time coming in, I thought he did well.” - Andy Reid on RB Ronald Jones’ Week 12 performance
“I kind of feel like our D-line did a hell of a job again today generating pressure and getting their hands up. Shout out to Los (Carlos Dunlap) on that pick that was basically 75% him, 25% me – I give him credit on that one. But also, we’re just catching the balls that come to us. We had a couple early in the year that we just dropped, so we just kind of made a focus on that and just get the ones they give us. Execute down the stretch and try to get our hands on as many footballs as we can.” - Nick Bolton on turnovers forced in Week 12
Quick Hits:
From Rick Burkholder: The Chiefs had a special guest in the building in Week 12. Renowned Chiefs fan and actor Jason Sudeikis of “Ted Lasso” took in the game and was in the locker room following the match.
From The Katz Bros: Chiefs DT Chris Jones’ agent reports that he earned an incentive worth $1.25 million for recording his 10th sack of the season. This is Jones’ second-best career sack total and he still has six regular-season games left to play.

From NFL Research: More history made by Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and TE Travis Kelce. It seems like on a weekly basis, these two are stamping their names in the NFL record books.

I like both adds. Gordon for Donkey Intel and the KC Lab crew had me excited about Edwards when he came out in the draft.
