Chiefs agree to 1-year deal with RB Elijah Mitchell, source confirms
Mitchell's pending arrival bolsters backfield
The Chiefs on Monday made another move on offense by addressing the running back position.
The Chiefs and running back Elijah Mitchell agreed to a one-year deal, a source familiar with the situation confirmed with KC Sports Network.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz reports the deal is worth up to $3.5 million.
Mitchell, who turns 27 in May, bolsters the backfield behind Isiah Pacheco. Mitchell’s pending arrival comes with Kareem Hunt scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday.
The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Mitchell entered the NFL in 2021 out of Louisiana-Lafayette as a sixth-round pick with the San Francisco 49ers.
He has appeared in 27 career games with 12 starts, totaling 1,523 yards rushing and nine touchdowns on 327 carries. He’s also a capable receiver, hauling in 28 catches for 158 yards and a touchdown. Mitchell didn’t play the 2024 season as a hamstring injury landed him on injured reserve.
Mitchell’s best season came during his rookie campaign, where he notched a career-high 963 yards rushing and five touchdowns on 207 carries.
Mitchell becomes the second 49er player the Chiefs secured in the first hour of the NFL’s two-day open negotiations period ahead of Wednesday’s start of the league’s new calendar year.
The Chiefs earlier agreed to a two-year deal with offensive tackle Jaylon Moore, who projects to start at left tackle.
