Chiefs' Andy Reid provides updates on Xavier Worthy, Jalen Royals
Reid says Worthy is "day-by-day" with shoulder injury
Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy’s shoulder injury is arguably a top concern ahead of Week 2’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
But any hope for a clear picture on Worthy’s status apparently will need to wait as the week progresses.
“So, as far as the injuries go, I know Xavier is the big question,” Reid said during a Monday morning Zoom teleconference. “He’s rehabbing, working his shoulder.
“We’ll just see where it goes day-by-day here, see where we end up.”
Granted, it’s early in the week and the Chiefs don’t return to the practice field until Wednesday.
But Reid’s comments don’t exactly exude confidence that Worthy could be on the field against the Eagles.
The second-year wide receiver suffered the injury after he collided with tight end Travis Kelce on an underneath crossing route just three plays into Week 1’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Worthy received medical evaluation on the sidelines before walking to the locker room with a towel over his head. The Chiefs eventually ruled Worthy out of the game.
Reid told reporters after the Friday night contest in Brazil that Worthy would undergo an MRI on Saturday, but the head coach on Monday didn’t provide an update on the results.
The NFL Network, however, reported Sunday that Worthy suffered a shoulder dislocation and is mulling options.
Meanwhile, Worthy isn’t the only wide receiver dealing with an injury.
Rookie Jalen Royals didn’t play in Week 1 because of knee tendinitis, which also caused him to miss time late in training camp and the final preseason game.
Reid provided an updated on the Chiefs’ fourth-round pick during Monday’s teleconference.
“Jalen is doing a good job with his rehab,” Reid said. “We’ll just see how that ends up this week. We’ve got a couple of days here that we’ve had, so guys are making good progress, but we’ll see where it rolls.”
With Worthy down early in Week 1’s game and Royals not playing in the season opener, the Chiefs relied on wide receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster, Hollywood Brown, Tyquan Thornton, Jason Brownlee and Nikko Remigio.
Brown led the group with 10 catches for 99 yards on 16 targets, while Smith-Schuster contributed 55 yards receiving on five catches and Thornton produced two catches for 41 yards.
The Chiefs practice Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, giving the team three days of on-field preparation before hosting the Eagles on Sunday at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
Whether Royals and Worthy can practice remains to be seen, but Reid appears comfortable with the current wide receiver group.
“If neither play, we’ve got guys that we played with the other night that are good football players,” Reid said.
