Chiefs' Drue Tranquill to get the green dot again in Week 4 | KCSN Daily 9.29

The Kansas City Chiefs will be without LB Nick Bolton for the second consecutive week as he deals with an ankle sprain.
This means LB Drue Tranquill will get a second consecutive week as the defensive signal-caller for Kansas City. The coaching staff felt that Tranquill did an excellent job in his first outing as MIKE linebacker against the Chicago Bears.
“Yeah, so he did good last week,” Chiefs HC Andy Reid said on Friday. “You know he’s been doing it a while, so you’re going to get a good day’s work and see how things fall. He works extremely hard at his job, and you know I think every snap he gets he becomes more familiar with it.”
Tranquill mentioned on Wednesday that calling the defense in Arrowhead Stadium was actually more difficult than you’d expect. With how loud the fans get when the defense is on the field most of the communication was non-verbal. This week against the Jets, he’ll get to flesh out some of the issues he had the week prior.
“I thought he (Drue Tranquill) did a great job,” Chiefs LB coach Brendan Daly said. “He has been working since the day he got here, but he’s been doing a lot of different things, he’s learned multiple roles. The situation came up with Nick (Bolton) and he was ready to go, he works his tail off. It’s very important to him. He cares a lot about getting it right, so to speak. I would say he did an excellent job. The communication on the field was really good, he got us in and out of a couple checks, (he) managed the game well – (it) wasn’t perfect, there were a couple things that I think even he would tell you he’d like to fix or correct but based on what he had on his plate I thought he did a really nice job.”
All-in-all, each week Tranquill should get a bit more comfortable with this role. Who knows? This experience could even prove valuable later on in the year come the playoffs.

Matt Nagy on Rashee Rice’s development:
Rice is angling for more playing time after leading the Chiefs in targets and receptions. He’s even tied for the lead among wide receiver touchdowns on the team, all while having less than 40% offensive snap share.
Chiefs OC Matt Nagy spoke about his quick development thus far.
“Yeah, I think time has been great for him,” Nagy said. “Meaning that the more time he has, the more confidence he gets in himself, with practice, with the timing with (Patrick) Pat (Mahomes), and then he’s able to show what he can do to us as coaches. There’s a trust factor to that, and he comes in – I remember specifically in OTAs when he got here it just felt like he was drinking water out of a fire hydrant with so much volume even in OTAs. To where he’s at now, you can see and feel the confidence that he has breaking the huddle, getting lined up at the line of scrimmage. That’s great for us because he’s ultra-talented. He has a lot of great skills. We want to be able to use him and watch him continue to grow.”
Expect Rice to continue to have a larger role on offense with each passing week.

Rashee Rice Can Raise the Ceiling of the Wide Receiver Room
*Taylor Swift joke* Well, got that out of the way. What a wild existence we as Chiefs fans are living right now. Coming off a Super Bowl, still recovering slightly from week one’s loss due to an inconsistent offensive performance, amd trying to judge the growth of the group while star tight end Travis Kelce navigates recovery from a knee, while gracefully navigating a wild existence of his own.
Sophomore Slump? Not for the Chiefs defense.
Through three weeks of the 2023 Kansas City Chiefs season, the defense has been the best unit on the team. Read that again, pinch yourself (you're not dreaming) and read it a third time to fully let that sink in. This Chiefs team is built around its offense, and there's little indication to think that this offense won't resume their role as the driving factor on this team. But for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era, this Chiefs defense will not succumb to "second fiddle" status without a serious fight. The defense has carried this team through two games (one win, one loss) and performed about as well as a defense can this week, given the quality of the opponent.
