The Kansas City Chiefs are going to be quite healthy entering Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season. While they did add Travis Kelce to the injury report late in the practice week with a hyperextended knee, he’s the only player heading into the tilt against the Detroit Lions with a game status designation.
Short of a setback, that means each of WR Kadarius Toney, CB L’Jarius Sneed, and DT Tershawn Wharton will be available to play in the season opener.
Toney, in particular, is notable after he missed all of the preseason and the majority of training camp with a knee injury. Andy Reid was brief with his comments on Toney on Tuesday.
“He had a good week,” Reid said.
As for Kelce, he’s yet to be ruled out of the game. He’s likely a game-time decision for Thursday night’s game.
Here’s what Clark Hunt said about Kelce’s injury at a charity event on Wednesday:
“It’s one of those unfortunate things, particularly for it to happen days before the season opener. The good news is the MRIs are all good on the knee and so it’s just gonna be a day-to-day thing and his ability to tolerate the pain.”
If it only comes down to pain tolerance and swelling isn’t a factor, expect Kelce to push for Rick Burkholder to allow him to suit up and play.

Detroit’s talented D-Line:
Perhaps the biggest test for the Chiefs in Week 1 will come in the trenches. Led by former No. 2 overall pick, Aidan Hutchinson, their defensive line features the likes of Alim McNeill, Benito Jones, Charles Harris, and James Houston to name a few.
“They have a very talented front,” Chiefs C Creed Humphrey explained. “They present a really good challenge for us. They’ve got a ton of talented players on that front seven. They do some good things, so it’s definitely a challenge – it’s going to be a challenge for us for sure. We’re excited about it, it’s kind of why we play this game is the challenging parts of it, so we’re excited.”
The Chiefs have new bookend tackles protecting Mahomes and this will be their first full game together. Humphrey is quite confident in the chemistry that the O-Line has built throughout the offseason.
“Those guys have both improved a ton since OTAs,” Humphrey said. “We’ve gotten a ton of chemistry with them now, a ton of snaps under our belts with them so far. It’s been really good, those are two really talented players, two guys that have the same mindset as the rest of the O-line room. We’re really excited to have them, they fit in really well with our group and it’s been great.”
They won’t know exactly how it all comes together until they get out there and play. Yet, there’s an eagerness to get out there and get things underway as the 2023 NFL season begins.
