Chiefs-Jaguars divisional round matchup coming Saturday | KCSN Daily 1.16
Plus stats to know, divisional round schedule, KCSN podcasts and more Chiefs news
Welcome back to a brand new week of KCSN Daily, where we deliver the best Kansas City Chiefs content to your inbox.
With the Buffalo Bills defeating the Miami Dolphins and the Cincinnati Bengals defeating the Baltimore Ravens in the wild-card round, the Chiefs are set to face the Jacksonville Jaguars in the divisional round of the playoffs. Jacksonville was the lowest-remaining seed as the No. 4 seed, which means each of the top four seeds in the AFC conference remains in the playoffs.
The game is set to be played at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 4:30 p.m. ET. It will be televised on NBC and fans can stream it on Peacock. It’ll be a rematch of the Week 10 game between the Chiefs and Jaguars, where Kansas City won 27-17 in a game where they turned the ball over three times and failed to create any turnovers of their own.
Should the Chiefs advance to the AFC Championship Game, it will be played on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 6:30 p.m. ET. It will be televised on CBS and fans can stream the game on Paramount Plus.
KCSN Live Postgame Show - Chiefs to host Jaguars in AFC divisional round:
KCSN’s Kent Swanson, Craig Stout, and Matt Lane break down the Kansas City Chiefs’ divisional round matchup vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars and recap the NFL’s Super Wild Card weekend.
Stats to know ahead of divisional playoffs vs. Jaguars:
Series history: The Chiefs lead the all-time series against Jacksonville with an 8-6 record. Their most recent win, of course, came back in Week 10 when the Jags lost in Kansas City 27-17. These two teams have never met in the playoffs before, but in the two games they played in late December (2001 & 2006), the Chiefs won each time.
Regular season rematches: During the Patrick Mahomes era, the Chiefs have a winning record (5-3) in playoff games that were rematches against regular season opponents. In the divisional round in particular, the Chiefs are 3-0 in games that were rematches from the regular season. In 2019, they beat the Texans 51-31. In 2020, they beat the Browns 22-17. In 2021, they beat the Bills 42-36.
Third-down advantage: Third-down could be where this playoff game is won. The Jaguars finished 29th in the NFL in third-down defense this season, surrendering a third-down conversion 43.2% of the time. The Chiefs finished the season as the NFL’s second-ranked third-down offense, converting 48.7% of the time.
Fumble enforcers: The Chiefs had just nine takeaways via fumble recovery this season, but a pair of those have come in the final two games from rookie DE George Karlaftis. One area where the Jaguars struggled in 2022 was holding onto the football. Their 13 fumbles lost ranks 30th in the NFL and could be a spot for Kansas City to emphasize and take advantage of during the divisional round.

Quick Hits:
From the NFL: Referee assignments have been revealed and the Chiefs avoided Carl Cheffers and Clete Blakeman in the divisional round of the playoffs. They’ll get Shawn Hochuli, who officiated the Chiefs-Chargers game in Week 11.
From the New Heights Show: Travis and Jason Kelce hosted former NFL TE Rob Gronkowski on their podcast this week. Gronk admitted that Travis’ success inspired some competition from him during his playing days.

From The Draft Network: College football All-Star game season is here and the Hula Bowl was the first game to be played. According to Justin Melo, the Chiefs were among the 10 teams to interview Washington S Alex Cook at the Hula Bowl.

From CBS Sports: Over the weekend, news broke that the Titans had an interest in interviewing both Eric Bieniemy and Matt Nagy for their offensive coordinator vacancy. CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson reports that Bieniemy is currently focused on head coaching opportunities and that Nagy hasn’t confirmed Tennessee’s request.
