Chiefs' Josh Simmons undergoes wrist surgery, placed on injured reserve
Simmons suffered the wrist injury in Week 13's loss to the Cowboys
Chiefs rookie left tackle Josh Simmons is officially out for at least four games.
Coach Andy Reid revealed Wednesday that the team’s 2025 first-round pick underwent left wrist surgery and will be placed on injured reserve.
“Josh Simmons ended up having surgery on that wrist for a fracture and dislocation,” Reid said. “He’ll go on IR, and we’ll just see about the recovery on that, where it goes from there.”
Reid also provided feedback on Simmons’ procedure.
“The surgery went well, which is a real positive,” Reid said.
Simmons, who suffered the injury in Week 13, projects to miss games against the Houston Texans, Los Angeles Chargers, Tennessee Titans and Denver Broncos. He could be back on the roster as early as the season finale against the Las Vegas Raiders.
A more realistic scenario, though, surrounds the Chiefs allowing him time to recover if the team qualifies for the postseason and bring back Simmons at some point in January.
“They got to wait a little bit on that and see how that goes with his recovery,” Reid said. “There’s always that chance.”
The Chiefs selected Simmons in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, just six months after he tore a patellar tendon in his knee.
Simmons started the first five games of the regular season before he left the team for personal reasons before the Chiefs hosted the Detroit Lions in Week 6.
Jaylon Moore, who started in Simmons’ place from Weeks 6-9 projects as Plan B at left tackle.
Reid, though, pointed out another route the Chiefs might go, depending on right tackle Jawaan Taylor’s triceps injury.
“We’ll see what happens with the injured guys first,” Reid said. “But he (Moore) would probably be at the right tackle and Wanya (Morris) at the left if that’s the way it went.”
Moore took Taylor’s place in Week 13 when Taylor left the game, while Morris slid in at left tackle after Simmons suffered the wrist injury.
With Simmons on injured reserve, Reid announced the team filled the spot by signing rookie offensive lineman Ese Pole from the practice squad to the active 53-player roster.
In other injury news, Reid said defensive back Chris Rowland-Wallace (back) and right guard Trey Smith (ankle) will not practice Wednesday.
Smith’s injury prevented him from playing in Week 13, and the Chiefs turned to veteran guard Mike Caliendo to fill the spot.
