The Chiefs are focused on getting prepared for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC divisional round of the playoffs, but the organization got some important news about the 2023 NFL season on Thursday. The NFL announced that the Chiefs are among the five designated teams to play an international series game and among the two of those teams slated to play a game in Germany in 2023.

Itβs not a big surprise to see the Chiefs on the international stage again next season. The team has been lobbying for an international game in Germany ever since they secured International Home Marketing Area (IHMA) rights in December of 2021. Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt has been a longtime proponent of the leagueβs international efforts. Hunt and served as chair of the NFLβs International Committee from 2011-18 and remains on it to this day.
βWe could not be more excited to participate in a Germany game and introduce more of the world to Chiefs Kingdom this fall,β said Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt, via press release. βOur team and our fans have had incredible experiences in London and Mexico City as part of the International Series in the past, and we look forward to helping the NFL in its effort to continue growing the game in Germany.β
In the team press release, they detailed everything theyβve done to increase visibility and presence in Germany since securing IHMA rights:
Hosted a βDraft Hausβ for Day 3 of the 2022 NFL Draft, announcing a pick from a bar in Munich
Established a six-person Advisory Board to provide market-specific subject matter expertise for continued growth
Partnered with global sports marketing agency SPORTFIVE for international strategy, asset development and commercial sales in the German market
Signed preseason television broadcast agreement with DAZN
Activated during Oktoberfest in Munich
Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt and President Mark Donovan spoke at SPOBIS, Europeβs largest sports business event, held in DΓΌsseldorf
Participated in NFLβs pilot FLAG program, providing Chiefs-branded gear and workshops to all the βChiefsβ teams
Have the highest social media engagement amongst teams with marketing rights in Germany
Hosted a 200-fan watch party for the Chiefs vs. Jaguars game following the inaugural Germany game in 2022 with a replica βlocker roomβ photo opportunity that can be moved around the country
Launched a merchandise collaboration with DefShop in November, the first of its kind between an NFL club and a local brand in Germany

βWe are incredibly excited to put the Kansas City Chiefs and all of Chiefs Kingdom on the international stage with a Germany game in 2023,β Chiefs President Mark Donovan said. βWeβve aggressively pursued this opportunity because we know how passionate German fans are about NFL football and weβre committed to the international growth of the game as well as our brand. We think weβll be able to provide the right mix of opportunities for our existing Season Ticket Members and domestic fans while also creating unique experiences that will make this memorable for German fans as well.β
The date, time and opponent for this game are still being finalized by the NFL and will be announced at a later date and time. We do know that it will be one of the teamβs nine home games. You can find a full list of the teamβs 2023 home opponents here.
