A familiar face is back to bolster the Chiefs’ offensive backfield.
The Chiefs brought back running back Kareem Hunt on a one-year, $1.5 million contract, according to multiple reports.
Hunt, who turns 30 in August, returns after filling in admirable last season for an injured Isiah Pacheco and led the team in rushing with 728 yards and seven touchdowns on 200 carries. The Chiefs signed Hunt after Pacheco suffered a fractured fibula in Week 2.
The 5-foot-11, 216-pound Hunt originally entered the league in 2017 as a third-round pick with the Chiefs and posted a career-high 1,327 yards rushing on 272 carries. The 1,327 yards rushing also led the league. Off-field issues, however, prompted the Chiefs to part ways with Hunt in late November 2018.
Hunt then joined the Cleveland Browns, where he spent five seasons before rejoining the Chiefs early in the 2024 season.
Hunt’s re-signing provides the Chiefs another power rusher alongside Pacheco. The Chiefs added running back Elijah Mitchell, a dual-threat player, as a complementary piece to the backfield during the first wave of free agency.
