Chiefs set for challenge of facing 'very dangerous' Lions offense
Chiefs will host the No. 1 scoring offense on Sunday Night Football
Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is known to devise a weekly scheme to take away an opponent’s top threat, which he often refers to as a “game wrecker.”
A recent example from this season came in Week 3 when the Chiefs swarmed New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers, who was limited to two catches for 13 yards on seven targets.
Nabers is a single player, however, and Spagnuolo has a challenge Sunday night when the Chiefs (2-3) welcome Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff and his skill players to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
“You see it – they have a lot of weapons and the guy pulling the trigger out there is pretty good, he’s really accurate,” Spagnuolo said Thursday. “He’s tops in a lot of different things, and I flashed them up the other day. This is the No. 1 scoring offense in the NFL or was at least a week ago. I don’t know where they are, but I’m sure they’re still up there.
“Our thing always, our No. 1 goal going into these games is to limit points allowed and it will be the same focus with all the weapons they have. We’re going to have to pick and choose who we try to – quote, unquote – ‘try to take away,’ and then some guys are going to have to do some heavy lifting on their own.”
