The Chiefs on Thursday made a move to bolster the back end of coverage.
And the transaction brought back a familiar face.
The Chiefs signed veteran safety Mike Edwards to a one-year deal, sources familiar with the situation confirmed with KC Sports Network.
The NFL Network first reported the news.
Edwards, who turns 29 in May, returns for his second stint with the Chiefs. He first joined the Chiefs on a one-year deal in 2023.
He contributed that regular season to the Chiefs’ Super Bowl-winning campaign, appearing in 17 games with five starts. He then started all four games during the postseason and recorded seven tackles with a pass defensed in the Chiefs’ 25-22 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.
The 5-foot-10, 205-pound Edwards spent time with the Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024.
While he brings experience, Edwards’ return provides depth to the Chiefs’ safety position, which saw Justin Reid leave during free agency.
The Chiefs’ top three safeties currently project as Bryan Cook, Chamarri Conner and Jaden Hicks.
Edwards originally entered the league in 2019 out of Kentucky as a third-round pick with the Buccaneers, and he was a member of the Buccaneers team which defeated the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVI.
He has appeared in 83 career regular-season games with 30 starts, totaling 247 tackles (164 solo), eight interceptions (three returned for a touchdown) and 27 passes defensed.
