Chiefs taking a wait-and-see approach on Josh Simmons
Simmons practicing for the first time since Week 6
The Chiefs will have rookie left tackle Josh Simmons available for Wednesday’s practice.
Simmons makes his return to the team for the first time since missing Week 6’s game against the Detroit Lions for what the Chiefs called personal reasons.
That said, coach Andy Reid was noncommittal on whether Simmons would resume his starting role for Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos.
“Let’s see,” Reid said Wednesday. “I haven’t even got him out for a practice, so let’s see. He’ll jump in and see what he can do and mix it up out there and what we do, then we’ll go from there.”
Simmons has missed a little more than a month of on-field work, which includes four straight games, so there could be conditioning concerns.
“Let’s just see what kind of shape he’s in,” Reid said. “Get back in the football swing, so let’s see how he is.
“I’m sure he’s going to be OK, but we’ll see.”
The Chiefs have three days of practice to evaluate Simmons’ conditioning ahead of Sunday’s game.
Either way, the team will be covered if Reid doesn’t believe Simmons is ready when considering the missed time.
Veteran tackle Jaylon Moore has started in Simmons’ place, and the team would rely on Moore again if needed.
Meanwhile, running back Isiah Pacheco (knee) is the only player not practicing Wednesday.
Pacheco suffered his injury in Week 8 against the Washington Commanders and did not play in Week 9 against the Detroit Lions.
Right tackle Jawaan Taylor, who suffered an ankle injury in Week 9, is expected to work in some capacity.
