The Chiefs have their veteran backup quarterback.
The Chiefs are signing Gardner Minshew to a one-year deal, according to multiple reports.
Minshew’s arrival comes a day after the Las Vegas Raiders released him. He posted a 2-7 record as the Raiders’ starting quarterback last season before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 11.
The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Minshew entered the NFL in 2019 out of Washington State as a sixth-round pick with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019.
The Jaguars then traded Minshew to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021. He spent two seasons with the Eagles before joining the Indianapolis Colts in 2023. He signed a two-year deal with the Raiders last offseason.
Minshew, who turns 29 in May, has appeared in 59 career games with 46 starts, compiling a 17-29 record as a starter. He’s completed 1,094 of 1,729 passes for 11,950 yards and 68 touchdowns with 34 interceptions over six seasons.
The Chiefs continue the trend of securing a veteran signal-caller on the roster behind starter Patrick Mahomes.
In recent seasons, the Chiefs had Carson Wentz (2024), Blaine Gabbert (2023), Chad Henne (2018, 2020-22) and Matt Moore (2019) as Mahomes’ primary backup.
