On Monday, Andy Reid suggested the Chiefs could trade someone away ahead of the NFL trade deadline and that’s exactly what happened. The team agreed to a buzzer-beating trade ahead of Tuesday’s deadline, sending CB Rashad Fenton to the Atlanta Falcons for an undisclosed draft pick.
The draft pick is reported to be a conditional seventh-round pick, but the conditions attached to the pick aren’t yet known. More importantly, trading Fenton is a salary-cap-clearing move for the Chiefs. The team will create over $1.4 million in cap space with the move.
One thing that this trade tells you about Kansas City is that they believe in their young cornerback group. Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, Joshua Williams and even Nazeeh Johnson will all play a big part in the final 10 games of the 2022 NFL season and in future seasons.
As for Fenton, it’s clear that the former 2019 sixth-round draft pick was not in the team’s plans for the future. Trading him now ensures that you get something in return and provides the team with cap flexibility for the remainder of the season.

Chiefs activate CB Trent McDuffie from IR:
Kansas City Chiefs rookie CB Trent McDuffie was officially activated from injured reserve on Tuesday. With his 21-day practice window set to expire, the team activated him to the 53-man roster. He suffered a hamstring injury in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals and is expected to make his return to the football field in Week 9 against the Tennessee Titans.
Transactions:
11/1 - Signed to practice squad - WR Dazz Newsome
11/1 - Signed to practice squad - DE Azur Kamara
Quotable:
“Yeah again, he’s had experience with that in college, he was actually very good in college at that. Not as much in the NFL as college, but we know he has that potential and we’ll just see where that goes, Herbie (Teope), as we go forward here.” - Andy Reid on Kadarius Toney’s ability to work as a return specialist
“I think our priority is always any sort of advantage that we can get, we’ll pursue. It’s no different than the Rams. I mean they had a bunch of wide outs and they had a chance to get Odell (Beckham Jr.). We could’ve potentially still had Sammy Watkins on the roster and that would have been something, but I think you guys know how we’re wired. If it makes sense to us and it doesn’t put us in any long-term binds in regard to future caps and structure, but if there’s any way we can get better and there’s any way we can get Pat (Patrick) Mahomes more weapons we’ll do that. Obviously, Odell has done a great job for the Rams and it just worked for them that as soon as they signed him, they had a receiver get hurt so now it looks like an even better move. I think that it was something that if this scenario would’ve played out a year ago, with different receivers, we still probably would’ve acquired and pursued. I don’t think we’ll ever shy away from trying to get one percent advantage and that’s kind of how we approach things. If it makes sense for us, even if it’s just a little better, we’ll pursue it and that was the case there. Maybe it would’ve made a bigger difference than just that one percent given different roster constructions on different teams, but we’ll always pursue talent and if it makes sense, we’ll be aggressive in that fashion.” - Brett Veach on Feb. 1, 2022, about prioritizing a third weapon in the offseason
