Because the Jets are paying his salary. I would have rather gotten Murray for the same deal, but he had options for a real starting job. The Chiefs have the same philosophy the Colts had back in the day with Peyton. If Mahomes gets hurt, we're f'ed, and we don't practice f'ed.
Fields by all accounts is a great dude in the locker room, and he has a complimentary skill set in that he can run a package off the QB sneak.
Is he on the Mayfield/Jones/Darnold track of revitalizing his career? Nah. But with Mahomes out, he'll get first team snaps most of the off-season program with the best coaching staff he's ever had, show something in the preseason, and Chiefs can keep him all season or maybe flip him for a fifth when he looks good, Mahomes is recovered, and another QB gets hurt.
I disagree that the overall mindset of the Chiefs is or "we're f'ed". Reid plays to win and always has. Matt Moore delivered a win. Chad Henne saved the 2022 playoffs. Even Gabbert stepped in for a win while the Chiefs rested their starters. Reid expects the next man up to win.
Caldwell absolutely had that mindset in Indy but Dungy was also a "whoever is playing best win" kind of coach. It's the mindset that separates the HOFers from the rest.
Justin Fields is better than Henne and Moore, though. The Chiefs have not had a top-end backup QB in the Mahomes era. Maybe Foles and Daniel would qualify in the Reid era. I have every confidence that Reid could scheme up a gameplan for Fields just as GB did for Willis as an example. But they have never been the team to pay $8-15 million for Minshew, Mariota, Keenan, etc.
I personally would have gone for Joe Flacco who could be had for pretty cheap at this point in his career and makes strong decisions with a still decent arm. I do not trust Fields to make a decent decision with the ball in his hand. Flacco and Walker could win 1-2 games while Mahomes heals.
I also disagree that Fields is better than Henne and Moore. Fields has never had a higher QBR than 45 because he lacks average judgment.
Henne is 41, Moore is 42, Flacco is 41 -- Justin Fields is 27 and the $ cost to the Chiefs is generally the same as above. This isn't a complicated analysis.
Not certain what Henne and Moore's ages have to do with anything as no one is suggesting bringing guys back that have been out of the league for multiple years. You're correct, it's a simple analysis. Fields loses. The only time he's had a winning record was when Pittsburgh's defense bailed him out.
Why on Earth would they want Justin Fields? The guy is a dumpster fire of a quarterback.
