Chiefs trade to acquire Giants WR Kadarius Toney | KCSN Daily 10.27
Plus KCSN podcasts, reactions and more Chiefs news.
Welcome back to the latest issue of KCSN Daily, where we deliver the best Kansas City Chiefs content.
Just days ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline, the Chiefs have made a move to acquire WR Kadarius Toney from the New York Giants. They’ll send their third-round compensatory pick awarded to them from Ryan Poles becoming the general manager of the Chicago Bears along with another sixth-round pick to acquire Toney.
A former first-round draft pick in the 2021 NFL draft, Toney comes to Kansas City after clashing with the new regime in New York. He had 39 catches for 420 yards as a rookie, but he’s yet to make an impact this season, missing all but two weeks due to hamstring injuries. The hope is that a fresh start for the talented 23-year-old will help jump-start his NFL career.
This is a typical low-risk and high-reward move that Brett Veach has gone after during his tenure as general manager. Toney is under contract for 2.5 years, with a guaranteed salary of just over $5 million during that span. The Chiefs will also be able to get an extra year of control by way of a fifth-year contract option.
While Toney is expected to contribute right away this season, this is also a move made with long-term implications. Three wide receivers are set to become free agents following the 2022 NFL season in JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman and Justin Watson. Toney provides K.C. adequate protection should the rising wide receiver market force them to move on from one or several of those players.
