Chiefs' Xavier Worthy to practice Wednesday
Worthy hasn't played since suffering a shoulder injury in Week 1
The Xavier Worthy Watch continues for another week.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Wednesday that he didn’t have any injuries to report, meaning everyone, including Worthy (shoulder), will practice in some capacity ahead of Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.
Reid said he has seen enough from Worthy in recent weeks to be optimistic for the second-year wide receiver’s eventual return to action but then offered a cautionary approach.
“We’ll just evaluate him and take it day by day,” Reid said. “But he feels good, so we’ll see.”
Worthy (shoulder) hasn’t played since Week 1 and was limited in practice the past two weeks.
His continued presence on the practice field, however, is a step in the right direction for his recovery process.
Without Worthy, the Chiefs have relied on Tyquan Thornton, Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Nikko Remigio over the past two games.
Rookie Jalen Royals made his return in Week 3 after dealing with a knee issue, but Royals didn’t play a snap in the Chiefs’ win against the New York Giants.
Reid mentioned Monday that it was a team decision to hold out Royals from live action and only utilize him if needed.
“Well Jalen just came back, so I had him there as kind of an emergency just in case we absolutely needed him,” Reid said then. “His first week of practice in a month was last week, and he’s a rookie and so on.
“So, this was really his first game of suiting up and you can figure out the rest of it. He’ll continue to work in there. It’s great to have him back.”
Meanwhile, Worthy and Royals are two key pieces to get the wide receiver position to almost full strength while Rashee Rice continues to serve out his suspension.
The Chiefs will issue Wednesday’s injury report with practice designations later in the day.
