Eric Bieniemy a head coach candidate for the Colts | KCSN Daily 1.13
Plus AP All-Pro teams, KCSN podcasts and more Chiefs news
Welcome back to the Friday the 13th issue of KCSN Daily, where we deliver the best Kansas City Chiefs content to your inbox.
Late on Thursday evening, the Indianapolis Colts announced they had completed an interview with Eric Bieniemy for their head-coaching vacancy. Colts owner Jim Irsay was the first to share the news.
In each of his four prior seasons as offensive coordinator in Kansas City, Bieniemy has been a popular name in the head coach hiring cycles. Heās conducted interviews 15 times with 14 different teams, yet heās never been hired as a head coach.
The excuses Iāve heard are plentiful:
āHe doesnāt interview well.ā
āThere are skeletons in his past.ā
āHe doesnāt call plays.ā
āHeās rough around the edges.ā
Every time this point of the year comes around, you hear nothing but good things about Bieniemy from his players and the coaches around him. Especially, Chiefs HC Andy Reid, whose coaching tree is vast and successful in the NFL.
Whatever the reason that Bieniemy hasnāt yet been selected as a head coach, you can throw it out this time around. His resume is unmatched when stacked up against the competition. The Chiefsā offense has finished a top 6 scoring offense in five consecutive seasons under Bieniemy. His latest offense did so with All-Pro WR Tyreek Hill being jettisoned to Miami in the offseason. He has helped lead the team to five consecutive postseason appearances.
Indianapolis might be Bieniemyās best shot at a head coaching position this off-season. The familiarity with Colts GM Chris Ballard, who was a member of the Chiefsā organization from 2013-2017 when Bieniemy was running backs coach, could prove to be important in sealing the deal. Having someone on staff who has a working relationship and can vouch for him could go a long way.
Weāll see how the rest of the process shakes out for Bieniemy in the coming weeks, but donāt be surprised if he makes it to the finalist round in Indy.
