Five wide receivers for the Chiefs to consider acquiring
Players to help bolster a position group that needs help
There is rarely good news during May and June of the NFL calendar. Outside of the occasional extension, if your team and players are part of a media cycle, it signals bad things.
The Chiefs, again, are faced with unfortunate and frustrating news surrounding wide receiver Rashee Rice. He violated the terms of his probation for his actions in a 2024 car accident by testing positive for marijuana and will now have to serve 30 days in jail over the summer.
To make matters worse, he also underwent a knee procedure this month to clean things up. He will be rehabbing for the next 30 days while in jail, which seems problematic if you are trying to be the featured target in an NFL offense by September.
An unreliable player proved yet again to be unreliable, and now his availability and ability to perform are in question for the 2026.
The Chiefs wide receiver room already had significant questions surrounding it. With Rice losing valuable time while serving time this summer, it stands to reason that the team should be looking to add reliable talent to the wide receiver room.
The problem? The Chiefs don’t currently have enough cap space to sign their draft class. A summer move of some kind has to hit the wire before the start of the season. An extension or restructure to a current player seems like a logical move at some point. If they’re going to do it, you would imagine they want to do it sooner rather than later to get a player caught up to speed.
Eventually there will be some breathing room on the books to make a move. How big a move is the question. Here are five targets via trade or free agency that General Manager Brett Veach could make to improve the wide receiver position.
A.J. Brown
The prized target in the market has yet to be moved by the Philadelphia Eagles. Heavily rumored to the Patriots in a post-June 1 acquisition, Brown would immediately be the best pass catcher on the Chiefs’ roster.
Brown profiles as a ball winning X-receiver that can also provide some after catch ability on underneath routes. Andy Reid would have fun designing plays to feature his talents.
