Free Agency Extravaganza

It's the tampering period before the official start of Free Agency, and some teams are going wild.

In an effort to stop NFL teams from cheating and tampering with pending free agents prior to the official start of the new league year, the NFL instead created a two-day window during which limited tampering was allowed. Essentially, they decided to try to stop teams from cheating by allowing them to cheat. Brilliant!!

That delightful rule is why my favorite day of the offseason is a Monday, not a Wednesday, when the new league year officially starts. I love the draft, the picks, the strategy, trades, all of that. But the draft is a fairly orderly affair. One team picks, then the next is on the clock, and so forth. Trades happen, and it’s fun and exciting, but still mostly orderly.

Free agency, on the other hand, is a wild free-for-all. Any team can pick up any player, assuming they have the cap space and accounting wizardry to do so. Some teams spend everything on the first day of free agency. Others will sit it out entirely. It is crazy. An hour to two will go by with nothing happening, and then a flurry of moves sends everyone into a feeding frenzy. I love it.
