The Kansas City Chiefs’ offense hasn’t quite been the powerhouse that Chiefs Kingdom has come to know.
In Week 12 against the Las Vegas Raiders, after a slow start, the team had its best offensive performance in weeks. What was behind that turnaround on the offensive side of the ball, and is it repeatable? Chiefs OC Matt Nagy feels like the team is finally beginning to find its groove in several key areas.
“I would say it’s a good mix right now of a run game that has improved the last couple of weeks, which helps the play/pass, and within the pass game, we understand that the downfield shots haven’t been as explosive but it’s being efficient and scoring touchdowns,” Nagy explained. “Then being really, really good at situational football. I think a few weeks ago you look at redzone and we were struggling there a little bit, we weren’t scoring points.
“We were having some turnovers, several weeks ago, couple months ago, you know third down, third-and-short, third-and-one. So really locking in during the week of being good situationally but scoring more points, and I thought we did that in the second half too. We knew that that was something we had to get better at and we scored more points in the second half.”
The players seem to agree — fixing the issues that plagued the team in the second half of the games has led to better production.
“Penalties and turnovers have always been what we’ve been preaching in terms of how we fix our second-half stuff,” Kelce said. “And sure enough, you saw us flying downfield kind of penalty-free and turnover-free and found a way to get the ball in the endzone.”
No matter what, moving forward, the key is to not let those bad tendencies toward penalties and turnovers creep back in. The team has to continue working on the little things that got them back on track offensively.

The Chiefs were thrown a bit of a curveball on Thursday when the NFL announced that their Week 15 “Monday Night Football” game against the New England Patriots had been flexed out of the prime time spot. They’re now set to play the Patriots a day earlier, during the NFL’s early slate on Sunday.
How do those in charge feel about the change?
“You’ve got to keep the flexibility up,” Chiefs HC Andy Reid said. “Whatever they decide, we’re good. I know they decided but whatever is decided, we go with.”
Controlling what you can control is always a big focus for Andy Reid. He doesn’t care when or where games will be played. He’ll have his team play a game in a CVS parking lot if he has to.

Spags vs. Quarterbacks in their First Starts
Steve Spagnuolo and the Kansas City Chiefs defense have been phenomenal during the 2023 season. They rank third in points per game, fourth in yards per game, third in points per drive, fourth in sacks, second in pressure rate, and top 10 in countless other stats and metrics through 12 weeks in the 2023 NFL season. It’s not a stretch to say that the Chiefs defense has been the most consistent, most productive, and overall best unit on this team to this point of the year.
What is going on??? (with our offense)
This has been a weird season. For the first time in the Mahomes era, our defense is carrying the team, while our offense performs in spurts and sputters. Entire libraries of ink, both physical and digital, have been spilled on the altar of “what is going on???”. I myself have spent half a season writing about this, and I don’t foresee an end to it, even after we win our third super bowl ring in 5 years.
