How the Chiefs Keep Plays Fresh
The fullback is so back in Kansas City! And by fullback I mean a big running back that wears a number in the 40s and runs with the kind of violence and physicality that’ll make teammate Leo Chenal proud.
Carson Steele is in the mix for the Chiefs as a hybrid fullback/running back in the Chiefs’ offense — capable of lining up as a lead blocker but agile enough to be someone Andy Reid and company feel comfortable handing the ball of too as a lone back next to Patrick Mahomes.
Steele’s number is likely to be called even more in the wake of the Isiah Pacheco injury. He has seen an increase in opportunities week over week and showed promise carrying the football despite a fumble in week two.
The former UCLA Bruin’s presence on the team has allowed the Chiefs to bring back some concepts they’ve used in previous years with their fullbacks like Michael Burton and Anthony Sherman.
Reid went back to a short yardage play he’s leaned on heavily (and with success) when the team has employed a fullback — getting the big bodied back involved in the run game. Now they’re utilizing Steele with an old play they’re able to bring back with the kind of personnel they now have on the roster.
