A weekly look at everything happening across Kansas City sports.
The Chiefs did not participate in anything this week, but there was still news, and now we know when we will next see them. There was still plenty happening across Kansas City sports. Here is where things stand heading into the weekend.
Chiefs Check-in: Training Camp Dates Announced, Rice Released From Jail
The next time we see Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid, and the rest of the Chiefs will be in St. Joseph, MO, on July 29, when the team officially kicks off the ramp-up to the 2026 season at Missouri Western State University. This will mark the 16th consecutive training camp the club has held at MWSU.
Open practices run from then through Thursday, Aug. 20, with all sessions taking place on the Mosaic Training Fields. All practices are free to the public, except for a couple of Season Ticket Member-exclusive days, but tickets must be reserved in advance at chiefs.com/trainingcamp.
On another Chiefs-related front, wide receiver Rashee Rice was released from jail this week after serving 30 days in Dallas County for violating his probation. Reporters were present at the time of his release, and Rice quickly made his way past them before being seen exiting an SUV. Per Andy Reid last week, Rice is expected to head to Kansas City to continue rehabbing the knee he had surgery on shortly before his violation. He was reportedly permitted to receive treatment at Parkland Hospital in Dallas throughout his sentence. The next time we see Rice will be at training camp in St. Joe.

Royals Report: Perez Makes History, but the IL Takes Its Toll
It was a frustrating week for the Royals for the most part, dropping four of six to the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals before taking out all of that frustration on their Show-Me-State rivals Thursday night.
In a 14-6 drubbing of the St. Louis Cardinals, future Hall of Fame catcher Salvador Perez made history. He broke a tie with George Brett for the all-time home run lead at Kauffman Stadium, a ballpark with a 54-year history, blasting a mammoth 385-foot solo shot for his 137th at the K. The hometown crowd rose to its feet, with the multi-time All-Star acknowledging the moment with a tip of his cap to a sea of blue prior to his following at-bat. It was a special moment for the 14-year veteran and his fans.
Perez and right fielder Starling Marte each collected three hits in the Royals’ 17-hit performance. First baseman Jac Caglianone added to the long-ball fun as well, with the offense carrying starter Noah Cameron’s five-inning, three-run outing. It was also a strong week individually for Bobby Witt Jr. and catcher Carter Jensen, who combined for 21 hits, seven doubles, two home runs, and 10 RBI.
Witt hammered his 10th home run of the season before exiting early with a knee issue against the Cardinals last night, which will bear watching. On the pitching side, Luinder Avila and Stephen Kolek were the bright spots in the rotation. Avila allowed one run over 5.2 innings, while Kolek was dominant, tossing 7.1 scoreless frames.
The IL was not kind to Kansas City this week, however, hampering the team’s ability to build any real momentum. First baseman Vinnie Pasquantino landed on the IL with a right hamate fracture, while closer Carlos Estevez and ace Cole Ragans were both transferred to the 60-day list. Star third baseman Maikel Garcia has avoided the IL thus far despite dealing with left hand soreness, but manager Matt Quatraro indicated he is not likely to re-enter the lineup for the remainder of the I-70 Series.
World Cup: Historical Performance in Arrowhead, USA Electric Vs Paraguay
The FIFA World Cup has arrived in Kansas City.
The first match at Arrowhead did not disappoint. Lionel Messi, perhaps the greatest soccer player of all time, put forth an unforgettable performance in a 3-0 victory over Algeria, recording his first-ever World Cup hat-trick. It was the sixth World Cup of his career, dating back to 2006, and Kansas City soccer fans got a front-row seat to history.
The United States Men’s National Team got in on the excitement as well. Playing in Los Angeles, the home country dominated Paraguay in their tournament opener, winning 4-1. Folarin Balogun starred with two first-half goals, supplemented by an early own goal and a late strike from Gio Reyna. The Americans will be tested in their next match, however, as Christian Pulisic has been ruled out against Australia today after playing limited minutes against Paraguay.
