Key to thwarting Chargers' offense in Week 7 | KCSN Daily 10/18
Plus latest Chiefs news, KCSN podcasts, Substack articles and more.
The Kansas City Chiefs are set to face an AFC West opponent for the second consecutive week. Even with the Los Angeles Chargers’ season off to a poor start, the defenders in Kansas City aren’t overlooking this Los Angeles team.
Chris Jones considers Chargers QB Justin Herbert a top-10 quarterback. Willie Gay Jr. is cognizant of all of the weapons that Los Angeles has on offense from Keenan Allen to Austin Ekeler. Chargers HC Brendan Staley has been known for his aggressive play-calling tendencies, often going for it on fourth down throughout his career. The Chiefs’ defense knows exactly what they need to do to slow their opponent down in Week 7.
“The first key is to get them into third-and-longer, so they won’t go for it,” Gay Jr. said. “If it’s third-and-two now it’s four-down territory. They treat third-down like second down, and now it’s fourth-and-one. They’re obviously going for it across the 50 yard-line, so we try to get teams in longer down and distances. Negative plays start that. That’s the key for us – sacks, TFLs (tackles for loss), and negative plays on pass downs.”
K.C. is no stranger to creating negative players. They’re currently ranked 12th in the league in sacks and 7th in the league in tackles for loss through the first six weeks of the season.
Travis Kelce’s locker room routine is WILD
Charles Omenihu’s return has Chiefs’ defense turnt
The Chiefs will get defender Charles Omenihu back in Week 7 against the Chargers. He served his six-game suspension, and he’s rejoined his teammates. It remains to be seen how much he’ll play in his return to action, but his defensive teammates are certainly excited to see him back with the team.
“He’s just a versatile defensive end, a guy that can play the run, play the pass, he’s long, he can set edges,” Chiefs LB Willie Gay Jr. said. “He’s a very versatile guy, he came from the 49ers where they had a great defense. To add him to our team and to the defensive room is a big piece.”
As for Chris Jones, he’s of the opinion that you can never have enough pass rushers.
“It should be a lot of fun,” Jones said. “I think you can never have enough pass rushers. I think he’s a guy that brings a lot of versatility to our room, to our team especially. I’m thankful he’s back, (we’re) ready to insert him in and utilize his ability, especially on pass rush downs.”
That logic applies to Frank Clark, too.

The BEST per-drive defense in the Spagnuolo Era!
Through six games, there’s no doubt that this is the best defense of the Patrick Mahomes/Steve Spagnuolo era. In almost every measurable metric, Spagnuolo’s Kansas City Chiefs defense has matched or exceeded his previous averages, and this defense — not its high-flying offense — is the main reason why the team is 5-1. While there’s still plenty of time for Andy Reid’s side of the ball to course-correct, the team has the luxury of leaning on their suddenly-terrific defense.
Season Review Through Six Games
A full third of the season is over, and our very own Kansas City Chiefs are sitting at 5-1 atop the AFC, over juggernauts like the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills. I think it’s time to take a look at what we’ve done to get here, and how it looks different than last year.
