Late June Chiefs 53-Man Roster Projection
Before preseason additions and camp darlings rise to the surface, how might the 2026 roster could shape up?
The summer months have hit, and we’re a little over a month out from Chiefs’ training camp beginning in St. Joseph, MO. The team has done a lot of work on the roster over this offseason, with significant trades, signings, and a monstrous extension for Patrick Mahomes.
There could still be work to be done to clear cap space and give the team more flexibility to improve the 2026 roster at key positions. If, say, a Creed Humphrey extension occurred, there could be some more wiggle room to add a veteran to the receiver or defensive end room.
For now, though, here is my projection for the Chiefs’ initial 53-man roster as it stands today.
Quarterback (3)
Patrick Mahomes, Justin Fields, Garrett Nussmeier
The Chiefs didn’t pick Garrett Nussmeier to set a seventh-round pick on fire. They have an opportunity to hold onto a talented player who, when healthy, warranted a selection earlier than when he was taken in the draft.
Add in Patrick Mahomes coming off an ACL injury, and it makes sense to further insulate the quarterback room. They don’t normally hold onto three, but they have a couple times in the Mahomes era.
