Patrick Mahomes is on his own Eras tour
How the quarterback is pulling from different versions of himself in 2025
We at KCSN have a phrase that gets thrown around a lot when enjoying the greatest era of Chiefs football there ever will be: these are the good ole days.
I don’t think anyone takes it for granted. I also think the success of this team has broken all of our brains to the point that it’s hard to truly comprehend how incredible a time it is.
Regardless of the sour end, the Chiefs just completed the greatest three-year run in the history of the sport — getting closer to a threepeat than any team in football history.
Last season was mired in a brand of football that even the players didn’t seem to enjoy all the time. The offense lacked rhythm and confidence, but the team just kept finding ways to play complementary football and win.
The Chiefs’ starters have lost three times as many games as they did in 2024 before Halloween. As frustrating as moments have been this season, if you asked Chiefs fans, you’d be surprised at how many would say they are enjoying this season more than last.
The pressure of the threepeat is gone, and the pressure is also literally off Mahomes’ blindside. Josh Simmons and Jaylon Moore were acquired to make sure that the quarterback was confident and secure in protection, and Mahomes has rewarded fans with the most fun season offensively in quite some time.
The Chiefs’ offense is back to establishing the fun. Their quarterback is playing with a freedom and confidence that has been unlocked by a quality offensive line from left to right. He looks like he’s enjoying it more than he has in recent years.
Mahomes just turned 30 in September. He is in the prime years of his career — a time where the physical talents are all there, but the processing power is high with so many years under his belt. And in 2025, a year in which he is currently the favorite to be the MVP, he is using different things from all the brands of football he’s had to play in his career.
Similar to his friend Taylor Swift, Mahomes is on his Eras tour this season. You’re seeing flashes of different seasons throughout the entirety of the 2025 season.
Explosive Passing
One of the hallmarks of the early Mahomes era was the vertical passing game to Tyreek Hill. As the team moved on from the explosive receiver, so did the explosive passing game.
The downfield passing is back in a way that it hasn’t been in recent memory.
According to Sumer Sports, Mahomes’ deep pass percentage rate (passes thrown 20+ yards) has jumped from 8.43% in 2024 to 12.68% in 2025 — a significant jump to date.
Everything about the offense looks better because Mahomes is back to looking down the field for explosive plays. That starts with good pass protection that he trusts. The shifting of assets devoted to the tackle spot has helped Mahomes look more comfortable in the pocket and allowed him to look to push the ball down the field more.
Credit to Tyquan Thornton and Xavier Worthy for providing viable threats down the field that are opening up space for the entirety of the offense to operate.
