After suffering a high ankle sprain in the win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC divisional round, everyone has been wondering what Patrick Mahomes’ status might look like at the start of the practice week for the AFC Championship Game. It took some by surprise when Andy Reid revealed ahead of practice on Wednesday that Mahomes completed their morning walkthrough and he expected him to be a full participant in practice.
“We’ll see, but I think he’ll probably do everything,” Reid said, via Chiefs Wire. “But we’ll see.”
Sure enough, when the injury report was released (see below), Mahomes was revealed to be a full participant in practice. When he injured his ankle in Week 1 of the 2019 NFL season, it was the same story. He was back out there on Wednesday and listed as a full participant in practice. Mahomes says that this injury, while similar in some ways, is different from the ankle sprain he suffered back then.
“Yeah, it’s very similar, just a different ankle,” Mahomes said, via Chiefs Wire. “Especially, different ankles at the quarterback position, you’re playing off of and throwing off different stuff. So the last one was the leg that I landed on, so I had to find ways to throw where I could land and keep it in the right spot. This time I’ll have to find ways to push off and still make throws the right way. Definitely similar in a sense, but different limitations that I’ll have to work through.”
Mahomes intends to get a grasp on what those limitations might be during the practice week and attack them. If he’s successful, there’s no reason that fans shouldn’t expect to see the same Mahomes we know and love out there against the Bengals on Sunday.

“I’m sure a lot of the guys are aware of the comments that they’re making. I’ve been playing against this team since I entered the NFL, so it’s nothing new to me. The Bengals, they’ve always been the rah-rah team and you know they back it up. That’s what they’ve been doing this whole season, so it’s just moreso for us to go out there and play ball and have fun and put on my shoulders and helmet.” - Chiefs WR JuJu Smith-Schuster on Bengals’ trash talk
