The Chiefs have selected QB Patrick Mahomes as the team’s nominee for the 2022 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award — an annual award known as one of the NFL’s highest individual honors. It recognizes a player for their commitment to excellence on the football field, but also for serving their communities outside of the game.
“I’m incredibly grateful to be recognized as the Chiefs Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year,” Mahomes said. “I know how special this honor is and the history behind it here in Kansas City. Brittany and I take great pride in the platform we have to give back to a community that has given us so much over the last six years. Through the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation, we’ve been able to make an impact and support underserved children, but we still have a long way to go and we’re going to continue to provide resources to give these kids more and more opportunities. To be recognized for such a prestigious award means the world to me and I’m thankful to represent my foundation, Walter Payton and his family, the Hunt family, this team and all of Chiefs Kingdom on such a significant stage.”
Mahomes established his 15 and The Mahomies foundation in 2019, with the mission of improving the lives of underserved children in his communities. The foundation has since partnered with and supported a host of charities, also creating a number of programs and initiatives across the Kansas City Metro area.

As one of the 32 nominees, Mahomes will receive a $40K donation to 15 and The Mahomies. Every nominee will wear a Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year helmet decal through the remainder of the season and will be recognized ahead of the NFL Honors ceremony leading up to Super Bowl LVII. The winner selected at the NFL Honors ceremony will also receive an additional $250K donation to a charity of their choice.
The Chiefs are tied with the Bears for the most winners of the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award among NFL teams with five each. The last time that a player from Kansas City was selected as the winner was when former Chiefs OL Brian Waters won the award in 2009.

Mahomes is also now able to participate in the WPMOY Challenge on Twitter. Chiefs’ Travis Kelce (2020) and Tyrann Mathieu (2021) won the last two WPMOY Challenge fan votes. Fans are able to vote by using the hashtag #WPMOYChallenge and the player’s last name or Twitter handle between Dec. 6 and Jan. 8. Each retweet counts as a vote. The player who receives the most votes wins $25k for their charity and the first player to reach 1 million votes receives $10K, all courtesy of Nationwide. Hashtag information and official rules can be found at www.nfl.com/manoftheyear.

KCSN Update:
KCSN’s BJ Kissel catches up with The Athletic's Nate Taylor to ask him his 5 Burning Questions following the Kansas City Chiefs' loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
Quotable:
“Yeah, listen, they did a good job and it left other people open. But they – and I could have, let me start that with this, Sam (McDowell), that I could have dialed up more things that were a little bit more friendly for him too and got him into space a little bit more. So, some of that is on the calls. (The) other is that they had a plan for him where they were going to double (him), in-and-out him and take him out. Now listen, it opened up things for the other guys to be productive, but we take a lot of pride in being able to get guys open when somebody has a plan on them. And (in the) second half we did a little better with it — and Trav did better.”- Andy Reid on Bengals’ plan for Travis Kelce
“That’s a good football team. They’ve beaten us three times in a row, so they obviously have our number right now. Looking at it and what we’re going through, a lot of times it will come down to just doing what it takes. A minor mistake here and there, and it will come back to cost us. You can’t make mistakes against a team like that. You live and you learn and you bounce back. That’s the good thing about this team. We stick together no matter good, bad or however it is.” - Jerick McKinnon being on the team for all three losses to the Bengals
Quick Hits:
From KCSN: Our own Joseph Hefner has the latest rookie snap count data from around the league. It’s not a surprise to see the Chiefs drop a few spots with Bryan Cook and Skyy Moore seeing their snap counts fall in Week 13.

From Honey Badger Jr.: It would seem that Chiefs S Justin Reid has a Twitter problem or maybe just a problem with criticism. Perhaps it’s both? Hopefully, he’ll learn that some things are best left unsaid.
