Raising Heck: The Creep Set

Looking into one of Heck's favorite techniques for his offensive linemen

Earlier this week, I dove into how Kansas City Chiefs offensive line coach Andy Heck likes to build his pocket in pass protection. It helped to define some of the boundaries that he likes to set and the symbiotic relationship between the quarterback and various parts of the offensive line. However, it doesn’t say how the offensive linemen should get to those positions in the first place. That’s where today’s — and next Tuesday’s — articles come in.

As we did in the last post, we’re going to separate into interior offensive line and offensive tackles when talking about pass sets. That’s not to say that each pass set is exclusive to the position groups — quite the contrary, in fact. However, some of these sets are easier to conceptualize when talking about interior offensive line or offensive tackles, and therefore easier to demonstrate. For example, today’s post will focus largely on interior offensive line, but the set itself can be easily translated out to the offensive tackle position.
