Retread or Renaissance: What the numbers say about KC bringing back Bieniemy
The Chiefs' offense collapsed under Matt Nagy, so they're turning back the clock to the coordinator who helped them dominate from 2018-2022.
The Chiefs have a new offensive coordinator. Matt Nagy’s coordinator contract was up, and was not renewed. That meant the Chiefs were in the market for a new coordinator, and just hours after the Chicago Bears lost in the Divisional Round to the Rams, they found one in old friend Eric Bieniemy. Andy Reid is well known to bring in coaches he is familiar with already, so bringing back Bieniemy as OC was expected by many in Chiefs kingdom.
When the news about Bieniemy coming back hit, the KCSN Discord servers absolutely blew up. After reading through several hundred comments, it seems there are essentially two camps here. The first is that this is just a retread hire, that the Chiefs offense needs new blood, new ideas, someone from the Shanahan tree, or McVay tree, someone who would shake things up and take the Chiefs offense into the modern era.
The other camp is that Bieniemy is the enforcer, the drill sergeant who gets the most out of his players. They say Andy Reid has innovated new offenses several times, just in his time with the Chiefs. Reid can do it again, and Bieniemy will help him to implement it and get players on the same page. There will be fewer mistakes, more focus, and more success with Bieniemy because he is willing to say the hard things to the players and hold them accountable.
