Spreadsheet Playoffs: Bills
The latest newsletter from KCSN Sports Data Scientist, Joseph Hefner
The Kansas City Chiefs are one win away from making NFL history. They are now the back-to-back-to-back AFC Champions. Yet again, they have prevailed over the best team the AFC could send against them. Technically, they have already gone further than any other team ever has. No other team ever reached the Super Bowl after back to back Super Bowl wins. Only the Chiefs.
Some other notable stats. Mahomes already has the second most playoff wins in NFL history (17), behind only Tom Brady (35). The Chiefs are the first team in NFL history to make it to 5 Super Bowls in six seasons. Andy Reid is only three total playoff wins behind Bill Belichick as the winningest head coach in the playoffs. He could pass Bill next year with another run.
Forget about history, let’s talk about the game.
The Chiefs had 8 real drives in this game. They ended both halves kneeling the ball, and both of those drives have been removed from the drive count here. They averaged 4 points per drive on those drives. They had 5 red zone drives, and scored touchdowns on 4 of them. An 80% TD rate is exceptional. They had one turnover, an unforced error on a bad exchange between Mahomes and Pacheco in the backfield. They had 7 explosive plays in this game.
