Steve Spagnuolo, you ole dirty dog you!
Steve Spagnuolo has had the Chiefs' defense on a tear the last three games with top tier innovation on the call sheet.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ defense got off to a rough start in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil. One of the major concerns coming out of the game was the ability for the defense to hold on long enough for the Chiefs’ offense to find their footing, missing a few of their key pieces. With a difficult schedule looming, it was a fair cause for concern given how easy offense looked for the Chargers in that first week. Those concerns have all been dead and buried since that game.
Over the last three games, the Chiefs' defense has given up just a smidgen over 16 points per game, and that just begins to scratch the surface. The defense hasn’t just held the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants, and Baltimore Ravens to below their season-long EPA/play (estimated points added per play) average, but rather forced them to a 50% or more decrease. Each opponent has also landed comfortably below their season-long success rate against the Chiefs, too.
So, how exactly has the Chiefs’ defense had this relatively big turnaround after things did look a little bleak to start the year? There are various answers but like most other times, it starts right at the top with defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Players executed better, matchups may have gotten more favorable, but it really boils down to Steve Spagnuolo being on his “A Game” for the past three games and showing once again why he’s the best defensive coordinator in the NFL.
