Surgery currently not an option for Chiefs' Xavier Worthy, Andy Reid says
Worthy suffered a dislocated shoulder in Week 1's loss to the Chargers
Chiefs coach Andy Reid addressed the media on Wednesday and didn’t have much to say on wide receiver Xavier Worthy’s dislocated shoulder.
Reid was asked if surgery was an option.
“No,” Reid said. “Not right now.”
What about short-term injured reserve, which would carry a return designation?
“He’s just rehabbing here,” Reid replied.
Taking the short responses into consideration, the Chiefs appear content to allow Worthy’s shoulder to heal without taking any drastic steps.
For now, at least.
Worthy, whom Reid said will not practice Wednesday, suffered the injury just three plays into Week 1’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil.
The second-year receiver collided with tight end Travis Kelce on a short underneath crossing route and then was taken to the locker room before being ruled out of the game.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs will also practice Wednesday without rookie wide receiver Jalen Royals, who is dealing with knee tendonitis and didn’t play in Week 1.
Reid didn’t sound optimistic that Royals will be available for Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
“Probably not,” Reid said. “It’d be a stretch.”
Reid expressed confidence on Monday in the rest of the receiving group, which currently consists of Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Tyquan Thornton, Nikko Remigio and Jason Brownlee.
The head coach reinforced his earlier stance by once again complimenting the group for their combined effort after Worthy went down in Week 1.
“Listen, I thought all the guys did a good job,” Reid said Wednesday. “They kept us in the game there, so I thought they did well catching the ball, got a few yards after the catch.”
Brown recorded a team-high with 10 catches for 99 yards on 16 targets against the Chargers. Smith-Schuster chipped in with five catches for 55 yards receiving, while Thornton produced two catches for 41 yards.
