The Kansas City Chiefs’ offense has been quite the conundrum during the 2025 NFL season. On paper, they measure out like one of the elite units in the NFL by checking in second in the NFL in points per drive, first in yards per drive, and first in the NFL in EPA/play. Their redzone efficiency is a little lower — just tenth in the NFL in redzone drives resulting in touchdowns — but combining all of these numbers should lead to one of the more high-profile offenses in the NFL.

Yet when we all watch the Chiefs’ offense during a game, there tend to be long stretches where they simply can’t find their footing. Some games, they are able to eventually find even ground and mount a comeback, like in the Indianapolis Colts game two weeks ago. Other times, the offense spins its wheels too long and can’t put a team away like on Thanksgiving against the Dallas Cowboys.

How is an offense that can be so efficient and rank so highly in so many offensive categories but simultaneously look so toothless for stretches of games? This is something everyone has been talking about all season, and a lot of the topic of conversation has centered around the Chiefs’ offensive system being a little outdated and stale. Comparing their offense to the rest of the NFL — especially other teams performing well offensively — seems to paint a pretty clear picture that could be part of the reason, but what exactly are the Chiefs not doing to make it feel outdated?

Let’s take a dive into some of the possible issues with the Chiefs’ passing attack to get an idea.
