The numbers behind the fall: What the data says about the Chiefs' 2025 offense
Looking back at the season to see what might have been the cause of the 2025 collapse from an analytical point of view.
The Kansas City Chiefs were not good in 2025. All of us know that. All of us are expecting (or at least hoping) that it will change in 2026. Another draft will have taken place, and another free agency period. Add some good players, add some new coaches and ideas, clean up the mistakes that were so prevalent in 2025, and the 2026 team has a good chance to get back to playing in Super Bowls.
This week, I want to start to look back at the 2025 season. What happened? What went so wrong for the Chiefs that they had their worst season by far in the Andy Reid era, and especially in the Mahomes era? Remember, prior to this season, the Chiefs with Mahomes had never failed to reach at least overtime in the AFC Championship Game. It was an utterly ridiculous run of success, for seven (7!!) straight years. And then 2025 dawned.
A 6-11 record, the 9th overall pick in the NFL draft, and a torn ACL for the star QB. 2025 was not kind to the Chiefs.
