The (Only!) Five Incompletions Of A Near Perfect Patrick Mahomes Performance
Even the few incompletions of Mahomes' day tell a story
By several metrics, the Houston Texans had no business taking the Chiefs to overtime. Sunday’s game should have been over comfortably in regulation — both by both team’s reputation and by the numbers.
Per the Kansas City Star’s Sam McDowell, NFL teams were 59-0 since 2007 when averaging 6.61 yards per play or more and giving up 3.8 yards per play or less. The Chiefs did that to Houston and still needed more than 60 minutes to close out a team they were favored by 14.5 points against.
Andy Reid described the game as “weird” and he was correct. And to make things even more weird, Patrick Mahomes set a new record for completion percentage in an NFL game with 40 or more pass attempts (87.8 percent completion).
The performance backs up the numbers. He was fantastic in a response to a game last week where the MVP candidate threw three interceptions and let Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts back into the conversation.
Mahomes had only five incompletions on the day. He was surgical for the entirety of the day — making excellent decisions with the football and solving the Texans’ defense quickly. It was a brilliant performance that should help propel him further to his second career MVP trophy.
Only five passes failed to end up secured in the hands of Chiefs’ receivers. And Mahomes performance on those play have more context than the ball merely hitting the ground. Here are the (only!) five failed pass attempts from Mahomes on Sunday.
