Three Chiefs players to start camp on PUP list, Andy Reid says
Reid updates players on PUP list, provides thoughts on Rashee Rice
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Chiefs began arriving Sunday evening for the start of training camp.
But three players are not expected to be on field when the team begins practice on Tuesday.
Coach Andy Reid announced that cornerback Kristian Fulton (knee), right tackle Jawaan Taylor (knee) and rookie tight end Tre Watson (undisclosed) will start training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
Of the trio, Reid sounded the most optimistic on Taylor.
“I would tell you Jawaan is probably closer,” Reid said.
As for the rest of the team, it’s all systems go.
“Everybody else is good to go,” Reid said.
RASHEE RICE UPDATE
Reid said he didn’t have an idea on a potential timeline for when the NFL will make a decision on punishment for wide receiver Rashee Rice.
The Chiefs’ standout receiver is potentially facing a suspension after recently being sentenced to 30 days in jail for his involvement in a 2024 multivehicle crash in Texas.
But the Chiefs have a plan in place until such time.
“We’re going to progress as normal with him,” Reid said. “He’ll go in and take all the reps that he’d normally take.”
While Reid emphasized Rice would continue to absorb a normal workload until the team hears from the league, a potential suspension would cause Rice to miss time.
Rice, Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and Xavier Worthy projected as quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ top wide receivers, and there was building excitement during the offseason for the trio to be on the field at the same time.
With Rice likely out of the lineup, another player in the wide receiver corps – whether it’s Tyquan Thornton, Skyy Moore, JuJu Smith-Schuster or even rookie Jalen Royals, among others – must step up and Reid pointed out the team will have a Plan B.
“We always rotate that position,” Reid said. “So, depending on what happens here in the future, whoever needs to play will be able to step in and they’ll know what they’re doing and be in good shape to do it.”
