Why Tyquan Thornton isn't going away
The former Baylor Bear should find opportunity through the rest of the season.
The Chiefs have always sought to bring in lottery ticket-type receivers every offseason. In recent memory, they’ve signed former early draft picks like Corey Coleman, Josh Gordon, John Ross, and Anthony Miller to try and find the talent that got them selected so high. This season, they found one that stuck.
Through three games of the 2025 season, wide receiver Tyquan Thornton has surprised with 171 receiving yards.
In the 2023 season, Marquez Valdes-Scantling — serving a similar role to what Thornton is this season — needed seven games to collect 171 receiving yards.
Last year, Justin Watson needed eight games to match what Thornton has recorded before the calendar turned to October.
Neither of those players recorded more than two touchdowns on the season. Thornton has two touchdowns through three games.
The scenarios aren’t apples-to-apples, considering the Chiefs are seeking answers at the position in the absence of Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice. That shouldn’t diminish what Thornton has done to this point.
He’s a pleasant surprise when the Chiefs needed some good news among the pass catchers. Not often do the fan favorites find ways to make this meaningful of a contribution to the team. He has. Justyn Ross walked so Tyquan Thornton could soar.
